I definitely feel comfortable to compost now! I think I’ll copy the compost system at Millcreek gardens using the pallets. It is also good to know we can buy mass amounts of compost from the landfill to lay down on soil (& super cheap- Hey I’ll shovel into a truck!)

No day like Thursday to jump on here eh 😉 Along with the others, I also see it good to separate materials ourselves as much as we can before dumping into our blue bins. I found it interesting to see workers having to rip open garbage bags to disperse the materials onto the moving belt (I mean DUH! Of course they would need to, just did not think of it before). I already have been dumping my bags into my home blue bin, though from the perspective of reusing the garbage bag for inside use (over and over and over). It was also a relief to hear in class that items do not need to be washed out completely. If more people knew this directly, I think that would increase recycling because it goes along with convenience. (Hey, now there REALLY needs to be a recycling bin at that frozen yogurt joint I visited last week!) Overall, loved the recycling plant we visited. Say, can I do my 10 hours of community service there?!!! ;D Thanks for all you guys are doing.

Lisa, in that case I pick up trash and recyclables!! Definitely a great way to spread the message (about recycling and keeping the earth clean). I’ll speak the same if someone asks

As far as I know, YES school milk cartons are recyclable! (Unless the carton is coated?) This website talks about excellent ways that schools do their carton recycling http://recycle-bowl.org/wp-content/uploads/School-Carton-Recycling-Best-Practices-Resources-June-2013.pdf

I went to a frozen yogurt establishment today and was so sad to see no recycling available for the cardboard cups and (assuming recyclable) plastic spoons. A recycling bin + a sink to wash out the cups would be amazing (I brought mine home to recycle).

When I shop, I use reusable fabric grocery bags and carry along with me used produce plastic bags to use until worn, and then recycle.

I’ve always been a huge fan of second hand and DIY projects with wood, pallets, nails etc. I’ll shop at thrift stores instead of buying new, even for gifts! Or just make something and gift it.

I’ve also gotten into minimalism and am in the process of reducing items in my house (giving away what I don’t want, selling clothes to second hand and consignment stores, etc). I looove putting bins of stuff in my front yard with a big FREE sign, fun for everyone I think! (Besides the free section of craigslist and ksl.com, there’s also a great organization found at freecycle.org).

And picking up trash! Always been a hobby of mine. I think it helps people to see as well. We can all give each other good ideas 🙂

Dog food bags (pet food bags)
I don’t see any info printed on the bag to determine what it is made out of. Seems like a shiny plastic.. The brand is Exceed

Hello all! Wow it is great to read all of your introductions! As for why I am here, I am just plain interested in recycling. It is definitely a burgeoning passion! I’ve been recycling at home and am an advocate whenever in group settings (camping, etc). I have been dreaming of a class like this and am excited for all it entails. In my fun time (all the time!) I enjoy music festivals, traveling, road trips, picking up trash, conscious eating, nutrition and massage therapy (I am a massage therapist full time and have my practice in North Salt Lake). I am excited to meet you all and for this venture ahead!

PS. John, the Appalachion trail is also calling my name! Check out the book/ audio of A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson! (also made into a movie coming out tomorrow :D)

See you all in a couple days!
